The Four Pillars of Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE)

Many people believe that formal gym workouts constitute the majority of their daily caloric burn. In reality, exercise activity makes up just 5% to 15% of total expenditure for most individuals.

TDEE is composed of four distinct physiological processes working simultaneously:

  • Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR, 60-75% of TDEE): Calories expended simply maintaining cellular homeostasis, respiration, brain function, and circulation at rest.
  • Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT, 15-30% of TDEE): Unconscious movement, walking, standing, typing, fidgeting, and occupational tasks.
  • Thermic Effect of Food (TEF, 8-12% of TDEE): Energy required to digest, absorb, and metabolize nutrients (protein has the highest TEF at ~20-30%).
  • Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT, 5-15% of TDEE): Planned, deliberate physical exercise sessions such as running, lifting, cycling, or swimming.

Mifflin-St Jeor vs. Katch-McArdle Formula

When estimating your BMR, selecting the right mathematical equation is essential. The Mifflin-St Jeor formula uses total weight, height, age, and sex, making it the most reliable equation for the general public (validated by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics).

However, for individuals with high muscle mass and low body fat, the Katch-McArdle formula is superior because it uses Fat-Free Mass (FFM) directly, bypassing body weight distortions caused by extreme muscularity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my NEAT decrease when dieting?

In response to an energy deficit, the brain unconsciously lowers spontaneous movement (NEAT) to conserve energy. Consciously tracking daily steps helps prevent this metabolic slowdown.

Does muscle burn more calories than fat at rest?

Yes, skeletal muscle tissue burns approximately 13 kcal per kg per day at rest, compared to approximately 4.5 kcal per kg for adipose tissue. Building lean mass permanently elevates your baseline BMR.
